Skin Care Tip:

Acne Prevention

Acne is the most common skin care issue between women and men of all ages.  Years ago, acne was only common is teenagers, but now due to our high levels of stress, hormones, bad diets, lack of exercise and lifestyle choices, adult on-set acne has become common between both men and women.  The two common types of acne include Acne Vulgaris and Acne Rosacea.

Acne Vulgaris results from bacterial infection consisting of cysts blocked deep in the pores.  This type of acne sometimes requires use of antibiotics (topical or oral), Retinols, Retin-A (Tretinoin), AHAs (which enhance cell turnover), or BHAs (Salicylic acid) which helps remove the “glue” stuck in the pores.

Acne Rosacea is a skin disorder that affects the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and in worse cases the eyelids.  This appears as redness and inflammation with acne-like eruptions.  Acne Rosacea requires care from a doctor.  This area, although caused by acne, is very sensitive to harsh treatments.  New laser treatments are designed to help minimize redness and pore size.  With so many causes for Acne, there are a multitude of treatments and medicine to use.  Everybody’s skin has different compositions; therefore, finding the proper treatment is based on a person-to-person basis.  Your Doctor and Aesthetician combined will work with you to create the best options for you skin type.

Some of the newest options for acne include:

AminoLevulinic Acid (ALA), just approved by the FDA for treatment of actinic keratosis (early signs of skin cancer), has also been proved for the treatment of acne vulgaris and acne rosacea.  ALA, combined with PhotoDynamic Therapy, treats acne and helps with mild scarring.  PhotoTherapy alone does keep Stage I and II acne under control, unfortunately stages III and IV need more aggressive treatment.  Now with ALA and PhotoTherapy, we are able to help minimize stage III and IV acne, which includes cystic acne and rosacea.  ALA works by reducing bacteria at the lesion site and sebaceous gland activity.  The doctor or qualified skin care expert applies ALA to the face and lets the product penetrate for 30 to 60 minutes.  After the desired time, the skin is exposed to Blue Light Therapy (ClearLight or ELOS Acne Laser Treatment).  The skin is only exposed for a short time and afterwards, sunscreen with a high SPF is applied.  In the next few days the patient may experience redness, dry, and peeling skin.  Once the peeling and redness disappears, the skin will have a more even and less inflamed appearance.  This treatment is desired for use 3 - 4 times, having a 1 - 3 week space between treatments.

ELOS Acne Laser Therapy, a non-ablative laser, using a broad spectrum of Light and Radio Frequency energies to target the sebaceous glands.  Blue light frequency heats up the P.Acnes (population of bacteria in the pores) and destroys the bacteria by stimulating oxidation in the sebaceous glands.  Radio Frequency is added to this treatment which helps improve the texture of acne skin, which is usually blotchy, rough and/or oily.  This treatment has no down time and is low risk, which offers a safe improvement with those with active acne.

Anti–aging Tip:

Laugh your way to better Health!

The sound of laughter is more contagious than yawning and can cause joy and amusement to the moodiest of people.  Laughter relaxes the body and reduces health problems, such as high blood pressure, strokes, arthritis and ulcers.  Some research is proving laughter to reduce the risk of heart disease.  Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases antibodies to prevent infections.  It also increases our appearance and heart rate.  Laughter is a great workout for your abdominal area, including diaphragm, respiratory tract, and facial, leg and back muscles, as well as benefits the digestive process.  A good, hearty laugh can burn enough calories equivalent to several minutes on the exercise bike.  Laughter stimulates the part of the brain that enhances learning by easing muscle tension and psychological stress to keep the brain alert and retain more information.  Humor can improve mental and emotional health by lowering stress and dissolving anger.  Humor elevates your mood by laughing at yourself and finding humor in tough times, especially the little annoyances that can put us and everyone surrounding us down.  Humor can help us shift the way we think and can adjust the meaning of something than makes it less overwhelming.

Here are some things we can do to improve our mood and mental health:

  •    Attempt to laugh at certain situations instead of getting angry
  •    Laugh to release pent-up feelings of anger or frustration
  •    Laugh to reduce tension
  •    Lower anxiety by envisioning a humorous situation

What is laughter?

Laughter is the psychological response to humor.  There are two parts to laughter, gestures and the production of sound.  When we laugh, both of these parts come together and healthy changes occur in our bodies.  The purpose of laughter is to make and strengthen human connections.  Laughter is more likely to occur when people are comfortable with one another.  Laughter is a way of bonding within a group of people, which is why laughter seems to be contagious.  Laughter can also be a sign of social behavior, a kind of “social signal” given that people are more likely to laugh in a group of people than when alone and not stimulated by human contact, both physical and emotional.  Researchers are finding that certain parts of the brain are stimulated when laughing.  The Limbic system has also been found to be central during laughter.

Why do we laugh?

Laughter is most likely triggered when we find something humorous.  Different age groups find different things to be more amusing at different stages of life.  Infants and children seem to find everything funny.  They are still learning about the world and the new environment that surrounds them.  Pre-teen and teenagers usually laugh to avoid tension and awkward situations.  This is the most insecure time in their life and humor can help teenagers feel superior.

Plastic Surgery Tip:

Abdominoplasty

If you desire a tighter, flatter abdomen and have been unsuccessful through exercise and diet then abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck,” may be the solution for you.  An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin, and may also restore weakened and separated muscles.  Liposuction could also be utilized during the tummy tuck procedure which would also help create the ideal body contouring that you may have always desired.  A tummy tuck is not primarily used to correct stretch marks.  However, it may remove some stretch marks on the skin that is excised during the procedure.

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck would be those men or women who are in generally good condition and still have excess fat and skin in their mid and lower abdominal area after trying diet and exercise.  Other ideal candidates would be women who still have undesired excess fat and skin after childbirth.  Overall, a tummy tuck could also help individuals gain self confidence and obtain the specific goals that they have in mind for contouring their body.

During your consult with Dr. Speron, the patient will discuss their desired goals on an individual level.  Then they will further discuss the different size and location of the incision.   The course of treatment and potential complications are also discussed at the appointment time. Make sure you chose a board certified plastic surgeon.  A call to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS at 1-888-4-PLASTIC (ie. 1-888-475-2784) can tell you which doctors are legitimate plastic surgeons with outstanding qualifications.  You can also visit the ASPS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. The ASPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body.
