Secrets To Beating Dry Winter Skin!

Dry skin is a very common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low. It can occur at all ages and in people with or without other skin problems. Everyone has had dry skin at some point in their lives. The problem with most people is that their skin gets dry or drier in the winter months. Fine lines in the skin become more visible, the skin feels rough and appears dull and flaky.

An important aspect of beating dry winter skin is to identify and treat any factors that may be contributing to the problem. Contrary to what most people think, hot showers or baths can actually worsen the problem of dry skin by removing the normal, protective skin oils. However, a warm shower or bath immediately followed by the application of a rich moisturizer is of great benefit for dry skin. The oil in the moisturizer helps trap and seal water in the stratum corneum and makes the skin softer, smoother and less likely to become dry, cracked and itchy. To get maximum benefit from your moisturizer, using a body exfoliant in the shower to slough away dead dry skin will allow the moisturizer to be absorbed better.

Do You Need To Take A Daily Multivitamin?

There is still good evidence that taking a daily multivitamin is a good idea for most adults in spite of some reports that it is not necessary. Intake of several vitamins above the minimum daily requirement may prevent heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases.

So what is the real value of a daily multivitamin?

Vitamin A stimulates the production and activity of white blood cells, is essential for remodeling bone, and helps regulate cell growth and division. Vitamin B6 and Folic Acid lowers risk of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C has been shown to decrease the incidence of cancers, and boost the immune system. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect against harmful free radicals. Vitamin C is also a key component to skin and promotes collagen production. Of course, there is also some evidence that vitamin C taken at the start of a cold might ease symptoms. Vitamin D helps ensure that the body absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for building bone. Laboratory studies also show that vitamin D keeps cancer cells from growing and dividing. Insufficient intake of vitamin D is associated with an increased risk of fractures, while vitamin D supplementation may also prevent them. Vitamin E prevents blood cells from sticking to each other and to the blood vessels they travel through. This will help promote clear and flexible blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Vitamin E is also known to slow down the aging process and help with certain nerve conditions.

Bottom line, a standard multivitamin supplement does not come close to making up for an unhealthy diet. It provides a dozen or so of the vitamins known to maintain optimal health. We still strongly recommend all patients should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A regular exercise regimen is also critical to achieving optimal health.

Yes, these lifestyle changes in conjunction with a daily multivitamin can help to maintain your healthy and fruitful lifestyle.

3-dezine.gif

If you want to have smooth, hair-free legs during the hot, summer months, it's a good idea to start thinking about it now. Many women opt to get laser hair removal in the wintertime.

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive method of photoepilation, which does not require any needles or chemical creams.

The advantages of laser hair removal include:

- A safe treatment if performed by a Certified and Licensed Medical Esthetician.
- It is considered to be relatively painless when compared to other hair removal methods.
- Many consumers have experienced long-lasting hair removal and even permanent hair reduction.

No matter what anyone claims, laser hair removal is never 100% effective and never involves just one treatment. It is still around, though, and still very popular becuase it does actually work if you are looking for permananet hair removal on any part of your body....

Make sure you chose a board certified plastic surgeon.  A call to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS at 1-888-4-PLASTIC (ie. 1-888-475-2784) can tell you which doctors are legitimate plastic surgeons with outstanding qualifications.  You can also visit the ASPS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. The ASPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. When considering a cosmetic surgeon, you should also make sure your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS).  A call to ASAPS (1-888-272-7711) or visiting the ASAPS website (www.plasticsurgery.org) can help you verify your plastic surgeons membership.
