The golden rule for skincare (that is impossible to avoid) is how
important it is to apply SPF onto your face on a daily basis. While
this rule of thumb applies to all patients year round and for all four
seasons, the message needs to be conveyed in bold print and underlined during the summer months. SPF protection is very necessary during the
time of year when sun exposure is at its peak and the easiest way to prevent any type of sun damage or skin cancer is by incorporating it
into your daily skin care routine and trying to turn it into a
permanent habit. There are a few key factors to keep in mind when
choosing the right sunscreen.
-The higher the SPF, the more protection you are getting. Many
companies boast SPF protection as high as 100 but many dermatologists
are now saying you are better off using SPF 30. The reason being that
many of the chemicals you find in higher SPFs can also damage your
skin and overall health.
-Try to find a sunscreen that lists “broad spectrum” on the bottle.
Broad spectrum means that it is protecting your skin from both UVA and
UVB rays. What many people do not know is that the sun emits more than
one type of harmful rays.
-Does your skin get easily irritated? Try to avoid any type of
sunscreen that mentions “oxybenzone” as an ingredient. It can be a bit
harsh on those of us who have more sensitive skin.
-If you plan on doing any type of water activities, make sure your
sunscreen has “water-resistant” on the label.
-Choose a type of sunscreen that you generally enjoy applying such as
fragrance free, spray, gel, cream, etc.
Between the 4th of July and the rising temperatures, grilling season is now in full swing! Here in the Midwest, we take barbecuing very seriously and many families replace several dinners throughout the
week for chargrilled burgers and hot dogs. Unfortunately, foods that
are typically consumed during grilling season are high in calories and
saturated fats. Luckily, there are ways to still remain relatively
healthy when enjoying one of America’s favorite past-times and we’re
here to give you some easy tips to keep in mind.
Let’s start off with the most central and obvious item that is
synonymous with grilling – meat. If you are opting for a healthier
grilling experience, then try to stick to lean meats such as fish,
chicken, or turkey instead of red meats. Veggie burgers are also a
delicious yet healthy option. Also, make sure to go for whole grain
buns over white and when it comes to topping your meat off, opt for
reduced fat cheese.
As difficult as it may be, eliminating or greatly reducing sauces will
cut down many calories and unhealthy ingredients. If that is not
feasible, then consider making your own marinade. Knowing what exactly
goes into it makes it easier to stay healthy.
A few other tips to keep in mind:
-Take the skin off your chicken
-Consume smaller portions
-Throw vegetables onto the grill!
-Skip the potato and pasta salads.
