Secrets to beating the dry winter skin!
Dry skin is a very common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low. It can occur at all ages and in people with or without other skin problems. Everyone has had dry skin at some point in their lives. The problem with most people is that their skin gets dry or drier in the winter months. Fine lines in the skin become more visible, the skin feels rough and appears dull and flaky.
An important aspect of beating dry winter skin is to identify and treat any factors that may be contributing to the problem. Contrary to what most people think, hot showers or baths can actually worsen the problem of dry skin by removing the normal, protective skin oils. However, a warm shower or bath immediately followed by the application of a rich moisturizer is of great benefit for dry skin. The oil in the moisturizer helps trap and seal water in the stratum corneum and makes the skin softer, smoother and less likely to become dry, cracked and itchy. To get maximum benefit from your moisturizer, using a body exfoliant in the shower to slough away dead dry skin will allow the moisturizer to be absorbed better.
Dodge the flu bug this winter!
It's that time of year again…flu season. Luckily there are a few things you can do to help prevent the flu from overcoming you. When a virus enters your body, your immune system can activate to overcome the virus. When your immune system is strong it can destroy the virus preventing from you becoming sick... On the flip side, the virus can survive and multiply to produce a cold or flu. In order to help prevent this from happening it is good to follow a few simple rules.
Eat healthy. Having a diet high in phytochemicals and antioxidants will enhance and strengthen your immune system. So eating fruits and vegetables 5 times a day can help immensely.
Exercise. Regular moderate exercise will stimulate the T cells. T cells belong to a group of white blood cells known as lymphocytes, and play a central role in cell-mediated immunity. This will help when attacking foreign bodies like germs and viruses.
Sleep. At least seven to eight hours a night. This will give your body the energy it needs to fight off illness.
Drink water. Drink eight glasses of water a day. It cleanses the body and removes toxins.
Wash hands. Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds frequently can help prevent the spread of germs from person to person.
Plastic Surgery Tip
Breast Augmentation, also known as Augmentation Mammoplasty, enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts through surgery. During surgery, your board-certified plastic surgeon will place the implant behind the muscle, to give your breast a more natural appearance. Now that silicone implants have been approved by the FDA, you can choose between saline and silicone implants.
The most common reasons why women choose Breast Augmentation surgery is to enhance the body contour of a woman’s breasts, because of size. Other reasons are to correct uneven breast size or shape, or to add more volume after pregnancy.
After surgery, you will feel tightness and soreness surrounding the breasts. Most plastic surgeons supply you with medications to help ease pain and swelling post surgery. Swelling takes between 3-5 weeks to disappear and some patients may remain swollen longer. It is recommended to wear a surgical bra or loose-fitting sports bra to support your breasts. During your post-op appointments, your plastic surgeon will instruct you how to massage your breasts to help them “bottom-out” which means drop and appear more natural.

Make sure you chose a board certified plastic surgeon. You can also visit the ASPS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. The ASPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. When considering a cosmetic surgeon, you should also make sure your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). A call to ASAPS (1-888-272-7711) or visiting the ASAPS website (www.plasticsurgery.org) can help you verify your plastic surgeons membership.
