What are the disadvantages of Obagi Nu-Derm?

Hydroquinone has been connected with ochronosis, but this is when it is used in very high strengths (much higher than is found in Obagi Nu-Derm products). Ochronosis is the condition when black specks spots form in the epidermis.  It is mainly found in people of African and Asian descent who have used it in order to lighten their skin.

Tretinoin thins the skin and reportedly thickens the dermis.  Aggressive use of it can cause intense irritation, sores and blisters.  Especially near the corners of the eyes and mouth and around the nostrils of the nose.  This is thought to be due to the reaction with moisture.

Why should I use all the products in the Obagi Nu Derm System?

Each Obagi System is specifically designed to work together as a system to transform your skin. When used as a system, the formulas work together to effectively balance the ph level and penetrate ingredients to the layers of the skin, revealing superior results.

This 24-week study in 301 subjects examined the clinical efficacy and safety of a proprietary system (Obagi Nu-Derm System) composed of a specific protocol of cleanser, toner, alpha-hydroxy acid, tretinoin, hydroquinone and SPF (Group 1), compared with a 0.1% tretinoin regimen, including cleanser and SPF 30 (Group 2), 4.0% hydroquinone regimen, including cleanser and SPF 30 (Group 3) and the most common over-the-counter (OTC) products recommended by physicians - cleanser, moisturizer and SPF 30 (Group 4).

Methods: Facial photodamage (perioral wrinkles, periocular wrinkles, facial wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, clarity, sallowness, tactile roughness and laxity) and irritation (erythema, edema, scaling, papular rash, burning, stinging, itching and tightness) were assessed by investigative clinical graders at baseline and 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 weeks of treatment. Digital photography, ultrasound scans, silicone replicas and full-thickness facial biopsies were also performed.

Results: Obagi Nu-Derm System was significantly more effective (P²0.05) than the other three treatments in all seven variables as demonstrated by change from baseline in evaluations at 12 weeks and 24 weeks (Figures 1 and 2).

Conclusions: Obagi Nu-Derm System outperformed the other three regimens (drug or OTC) at both 12 weeks and 24 weeks.

FOUR PHASES of Obagi Nu Derm System:
