Skin Care Tip:
Exfoliate!
While much emphasis is placed on the importance of cleansing,
toning, and moisturizing the skin, exfoliating is often
overlooked. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cell build-up,
promotes even skin texture, and decreases the incidence of
breakouts. It also allows moisturizing lotions and other skin
care products to better penetrate the skin’s surface.
Several skin care products are designed to exfoliate the skin.
Gentle facial scrubs or cleansers containing alpha or beta-hydroxy
acids will help with exfoliation. However, avoid using cleansers
and scrubs together if they both contain alpha or beta-hydroxy
acids to prevent increased levels of irritation. Disposable
cleansing cloths may also be used to exfoliate the skin. Men, as
well, can exfoliate their skin by shaving with a razor blade
instead of using an electric razor. Some shaving creams include
salicylic acid which increases exfoliation thereby decreasing
the likelihood of ingrown hairs and acne. Exfoliating may be
done 2-3 times a week, (excluding shaving, which can be done
daily).
Pregnant or nursing women should avoid products with alpha or
beta-hydroxy acids and individuals with sensitive skin should
use a fragrance-free product. Individuals suffering from rosacea
or cystic acne, or those using Retin-A should avoid using a
facial scrub.
As I have previously mentioned, physician-strength skin care has
a distinct advantage over most over-the-counter brands. The best
physician-strength lines are
neaclear and
Obagi
and seem to be the most popular, best tolerated and most
effective. neaclear was started by a plastic surgeon and Obagi
by a dermatologist.
Anti-Aging Tip:
Mesotherapy
Several people have been inquiring about non-invasive treatments
for body contouring, cellulite, and skin rejuvenation.
Mesotherapy may appear to be the answer. This treatment is a
series of injections administered to the middle layer of skin to
dissolve fat and improve cellulite. Mesotherapy has a variety of
uses. Therefore, each injection may contain combinations of
different substances, such as different vitamins and minerals.
Since no standardization of treatments has been established,
this therapy is not FDA approved. It is important to beware of
therapies not approved by the FDA and to be educated about all
the risks involved with these treatments. We recommend
individual interested in these treatments to seek the advice of
your physician and properly research the treatments before
undergoing any new therapies.
Plastic Surgery Tip:
Lots of people are interested in getting a brachioplasty, or arm
lift. We always get questions about whether or not the procedure
is necessary, effectiveness and different treatment options.
Surgical arm lifting and rejuvenation is a very common procedure
and very safe if performed by an accredited physician. Please

Make sure you chose a board certified plastic surgeon. A call
to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS at
1-888-4-PLASTIC (ie. 1-888-475-2784) can tell you which doctors
are legitimate plastic surgeons with outstanding
qualifications. You can also visit the ASPS web site at
www.plasticsurgery.org. The ASPS is the only one of the 24
boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties
that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all
areas of the body.
