Polymastia; Polythelia; Accessory nipples.

Accessory nipples, often called "supernumerary" nipples, are simply more than the usual pair of nipples that some people have. It's like nature's version of a bonus feature. They typically appear along a line that runs from your armpits to your genitals.

Why do some people have accessory nipples?

The exact reasons aren't crystal clear. But these accessory nipples form during the early stages when we're still in the womb. They tend to pop up along what's known as the "milk lines".

Do accessory nipples disappear over time?

No, they usually stick around for the long haul. But just like the regular ones, they might change a bit in size or color as time goes on.

Can you treat or remove them?

Most of the time, there's no need for treatment. But if they're causing discomfort or someone's not a fan of how they look, a doctor can surgically remove them. And yes, they can face the same issues as regular breast tissue.

What do these accessory nipples look like?

It varies. Some are super subtle and look like small bumps, while others might seem just like a standard-issue nipple at first glance.

Are accessory bits of brest tissue common?

This phenomenon, called "accessory breast tissue," shows up in about 6% of folks.

Does this accessory breast tissue hurt?

If it becomes swollen, tender, or impacts arm movement, it's best to chat with a doctor. If needed, they can surgically remove the problematic tissue.

How common are these accessory nipples?

Having an accessory nipple or two is more common than you might think, showing up in around 1 in 100 to 1 in 500 people.

Is the accessory breast tissue just fat?

Not really. This accessory tissue is a leftover from our development in the womb. Most often, it's found in the underarm area.

Can this accessory breast tissue become cancerous?

It's extremely rare, but yes. It behaves just like regular breast tissue, and while the odds are low, there's a tiny chance it could develop cancer.

When do these accessory nipples show up?

These bonus features are there from birth. They develop in the womb, so you won't suddenly find one appearing in your teens or anything. Often, they're so subtle you might mistake them for a mole or birthmark.

Any problems associated with accessory breast tissue?

Most of the time, it's no big deal. But sometimes, they can cause concerns like discomfort, restricted arm movement, or just general worry about appearance.

Where's the most common spot for accessory breast tissue?

These can appear anywhere along the lines we mentioned earlier, but the chest, underarms, and vulva are the most usual spots.
