Skin Care Tip:

What you eat can affect your skin!

There are a vast amount of products, treatments, procedures, supplements and medications out there for the sole purpose of keeping our skin healthy and looking great. However, did you know that what you eat also has an effect on your skin health? There are many foods out there that boost the look and feel of our skin, or that may even damage it. First, let’s talk about the foods that you should be eating for your skin. The two main foods are, yes you probably already guessed it, fruit and vegetables! Fruits and vegetables have been found to do great things for our skin, such as: improve elasticity (this is what you want to prevent wrinkles), improve hydration, increase its thickness and density, and increase its microcirculation. Microcirculation is beneficial because it increases nourishment of our skin cells and also helps detoxify them, both of which contribute to reversing signs of aging. Other foods that affect our skin positively are whole grains, legumes, lean meats, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low-fat dairy products.

How about the foods that we should avoid because they may damage skin or increase aging? The first culprit is sugar. Sugar has been correlated with aging our skin, causing wrinkles and fine lines, attacking collagen and elastin, and also may cause acne breakouts. Many experts say that if you want to fight aging and increase your skin health, you need to cut out sugar! However, sugar is sneaky and is hiding in many of our foods. Increased awareness of food labels may be necessary to decrease sugar intake. Other foods that are guilty of wreaking havoc on our skin are full fat dairy products, red meat, and high glycemic index foods which include white bread, potatoes, rice pasta and junk foods. It can be confusing when it comes to figuring out a meal plan and knowing which foods to eat or what to avoid. That is why it may be a good idea to consult a Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian who can personally customize a meal plan for your skin health needs and get you on track for gorgeous, healthy, and young looking skin.

Anti-Aging Tip:

What Is The Coveted Runner's High!

Spring is finally here and so is the season of outdoor running! With the pleasant combination of sunny skies and rising temperatures, the temptation to move our cardio workouts to the outdoors is too strong to resist. Running is a great way to increase your overall health, lose and manage weight, relieve stress, boost self-esteem, and fight disease. However, another added benefit is the ever coveted and addicting runner’s high that is achieved during and right after a prolonged run. A runner’s high can be described as a euphoric, blissful state that brings on feelings of happiness, calm, and a clear mind. There is also a feeling of a connection between the body and mind while experiencing the high. Another associated phenomenon with the runner’s high is a higher pain tolerance. Avid runner’s claim feeling reduced pain sensitivity which helps them continue running for long distances. The runner’s high seems to be designed in order to give runners that extra “boost” to keep going.

The science behind the runner’s high suggests a rush of endorphins and other pleasure related hormones to the brain which cause feelings of elation and calmness. Many theorists believe that the runner’s high is a product of evolution and helped early humans to run for long periods of time without pain for persistence hunting. Regardless of the science behind it, the runner’s high is a great additional benefit to the exercise and even more reason to consider it (after consulting with your primary physician of course). So get hydrated, grab your iPod, lace up your shoes and hit the pavement.

Plastic Surgery Tip:

Chicago Liposuction Cellulaze Surgery!

Liposuction is an increasingly popular procedure that consists of targeting certain areas in order to remove fat deposits and contour the body. Liposuction is well suited for anyone who is at a relatively normal weight yet has “problem areas” of fat deposits that make the body seem disproportionate. This may include exercise resistant fat or general areas of increased fat. In some of these cases, liposuction may the only option to get rid of this fat. Cellulaze is a new laser liposuction procedure but it is an actual surgical liposuction treatment for cellulite and not an office procedure. For best results with liposuction, you should have the procedure done when your skin has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal. When skin is inelastic, as in some older patients, it may not re-drape well and a skin tightening procedure may be necessary.
