Skin Care Tip:

Benefits of Sunblock

Wearing sunblock is one of the most important daily regimens to help prevent sun damage and premature aging. Sunblock protects us from the suns harmful rays, especially when we run errands, spend time in our cars or in a nice sunny window, when we are gardening or outside in our yards, on a winter day when the sun can reflect off the snow, and on a cloudy day, the sun still penetrates through. By now it has been studied that you can still get a tan while wearing sunblock, but how is that possible? Sunblock has only been developed to block the harmful UVB rays, while the UVA rays are still getting through. Sunlight in very small doses is essential for our bodies to produce Vitamin D, which means about 5 10 minutes a day.

Sunblock terms that are of great importance for us to understand:

  • SPF or Sun Protection Factor - Tells us how long we can remain in the suns harmful rays before getting burned.
  • Sunscreen Product with an SPF of 2 and higher.
  • Sunblock Physical block that contains a mixture of physical and chemical ingredients of an SPF of 12 and higher. Ingredients include, Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide for physical blocks and Avobenzone and Parasol 1789 for chemical block.
  • UVA Rays This is the most damaging of the rays, because its strength remains the same all year long. UVA can penetrate through clouds, windows, and clothing and is known to fade furniture, carpeting and clothing.
  • UVB Rays This is the weaker of the two main rays, because UVB rays can only penetrate the epidermis. This ray is stronger in summer and weaker in winter, which is why you cannot really tan in the winter. This ray can be protected by wearing sunblock.
  • UVC Rays This is another less common ray because it is absorbed by the Ozone layer. If it did reach the earth, prolonged exposure to UVC can be fatal because this ray is the shortest from the sun.

Now that we understand why it is so important NOT to wear sunblock, our conscience may make us never forget every morning before we leave for home. There are many different types of sunblocks and companies to choose from, so how do we know which ones are the best for us? Reading labels can help us, especially if we understand products used and which ones are good and bad for our skin.

The best physician-strength lines are LaRoche-Posay and Obagi seem to be the most popular, best tolerated and most effective. neaclear was started by a plastic surgeon and Obagi by a dermatologist. Who better knows about your skin??

Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is here! What better way to welcome Spring is with a little cleaning of all that clutter we have been holding on to all winter long? If you are feeling the urge to clean, we have some tips and suggestions to help you clean quickly and efficiently. Look at each room and determine what needs to go by making a list and share with your family. We are sharing a list of some of the best ways to tackle Spring Cleaning:

  • Start at the top of the room and work your way down.
  • Take all your cleaning supplies and tools into the room with you, this helps you avoid unnecessary trips to and from the room and saves time.
  • Unplug the phone, turn off your cell phone, keep the TV off and turn on some fun music!
  • Eliminate clutter.
  • Clean up as you go, it takes less time to remove new dirt and dust. Clean and put away stuff as you use it, this helps eliminate clutter to build up.
  • Leave Baking Soda on the carpeting at night, which will absorb odors. Vacuum first thing in the morning. A house that smells fresh leaves the appearance of cleanliness.
  • Keep a basket in the kitchen for mail, newspapers and keys to help with clutter. Keep a hamper in each bathroom.
  • Always pick up before bedtime. Start the dishwasher.
  • Prioritize! If time is limited, determine which is the most important and work on that first. Delegate tasks and duties to other family members, this helps get cleaning done faster.
  • Make a Checklist. When each duty or room is clean, check it off the list. This will help you feel as if youve accomplished something.

Happy Spring!

Hyperhydrosis and Botox

Sweating is a normal, bodily function to maintain proper body temperatures but when excessive sweating becomes a problem it can impact ones life. Having sweaty armpits, feet and/or hands is not only embarrassing, but it can cause stress in ones career and social activities. This condition is considered Hyperhydrosis, excessive sweating beyond what is necessary to maintain proper body temperature. Hyperhydrosis is a condition, beginning in late childhood or adolescence, where the Nervous system stimulates excessive sweat production in response to daily anxiety.

Botox which comes from a group of related toxins, which is a certain bacteria. Botox works by binding parasympathetic nerve membranes, no sweating occurs for about 6 months or less. Botox temporarily helps to block neurotransmitters that stimulate sweat production. Botox injections are painful and 15-20 injections are necessary and the procedure needs to be repeated every 4-6 months. As of now, insurance does not cover the cost of Botox injections and that can be rather costly for some patients, but the end result is worth the extra cost. Botox is approved for use on the underarms, palms and soles of the feet.

You can also visit the ASPS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org.
