Skin Care Tip:

Dry versus Dehydrated Skin

Dry and dehydrated skins are often confused because they both have the same effect on the skin, such as feeling tight, rough and uncomfortable. They are two different skin conditions because dry skin results from lack of oil-production, while dehydrated skin results from lack of water.

Dry skin is usually genetic and can even begin during menopause. Some people cause their skin to become dry due to improper skin care products or harsh ingredients, such as exfoliants. Dry skin becomes prone to skin sensitivities because it loses its surface protection and harmful bacteria and other factors can easily penetrate through the barrier function of the skin’s surface.

Dehydrated skin has little water due to moisture loss from improper skin care products, mostly due to oily-skin production. Overexposure to water can also dehydrate skin, as well as a harsh environment, such as wind or extreme cold. It is best to use either a Hyaluronic or Liposome treatment product under your moisturizer to help your skin retain moisture longer and prevent or reverse dehydration.

The best physician-strength lines are neaclear and Obagi. These seem to be the most popular, best tolerated and most effective. neaclear was started by a plastic surgeon and Obagi by a dermatologist. These physicians are skin specialists and know more about your skin.

10 Reasons why you should eat an Apple a Day

Newer studies are showing that you should aim to eat between 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Remember the old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Now we have ten reasons why eating an apple daily is good for your health:

  • 1.Apples contain only 60 – 100 calories, no fat and no sodium.
  • 2.Apples contain 5 grams of Fiber and 20 grams of Carbohydrates, so you feel full longer.
  • 3.The fiber, pectin (soluble fiber), antioxidants, and other compounds help to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol.
  • 4.Flavonoids and phytochemicals in apples help protect against Lung and Colon cancers.
  • 5.Apples contain Boron, a mineral to help maintain bone density and help protect against heart disease.
  • 6.Apples contain Tanins, which help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and urinary-tract infections.
  • 7.Eating an apple a day, skin included, helps guard against stroke.
  • 8.Apples contain vitamins and antioxidants which help prevent age-related vision loss.
  • 9.Apples contain Quercetin (a Flavonoid) to help fight cancer better than Vitamin C.
  • 10.Apples are high in Folic acid, a B vitamin which helps prevent birth defects and heart disease.

Plastic Surgery Tip:

Thigh Lift

Loose upper thigh skin and excess fat can be obtained by genetics or extreme weight loss. This can benefit from Excisional Thigh Lipectomy, otherwise known as a Thigh Lift. Thigh Lift surgery helps to tighten muscles that have become separated and weakened by age or weight loss. Thigh lift surgery also may help improve the appearance of cellulite. Unfortunately, the scar is permanent. All scars can benefit from Scar Advantage or Laser Scar Treatments.M

Thigh Lift surgery may last for several hours and is performed in a Surgery Center as an Outpatient procedure. General anesthesia is usually required. During surgery, your surgeon will tighten the underlying muscles that can cause sagging and loose skin as well as remove the extra skin from the inner or upper thigh area. You will have many deep internal stitches to hold your muscles and skin tight together, with external stitches to reinforce the deep stitches. A drainage tube will be inserted to drain excess fluid from your body which helps ease swelling and prevent any possible complications. The drainage tube is usually removed the day after surgery. The external stitches are removed within 3 – 4 days after surgery. Your Plastic Surgeon will continue to follow up with you to ensure you are healing well and there are no complications.
