Many individuals have experienced ear lobe damage or were born with an ear disfigurement. An ear lobe deformity can be commonly caused by trauma and can be partial or complete.
Office based procedures are available to correct your ears form this kind of problem. Usually most procedures can be completed within 30 minutes in the office and require minimal downtime and pain.
A consultation is necessary to be considered for this procedure.
Earlobe deformities can be caused by various factors. Acute trauma can cause split earlobes, which can happen if earrings are dragged through the piercing hole, such as when a kid grabs them or when a dog greets its master enthusiastically. Even repeatedly putting clothes on and off the head while wearing earrings might accidentally induce ear lobe damage.
A surgical operation is required to fix a split earlobe, expanded piercing hole, or stretched ear piercing. These treatments may be carried out by a board-certified plastic surgeon. This is a simple procedure done in the office under local anesthetic that takes about five minutes.
Typically, the plastic surgeon will obtain a medical history and do a physical examination. It's possible to talk about health conditions that might impair wound healing (diabetes, smoking, etc.) or cause bleeding (medicines, herbal preparations, etc.). They will inquire about the patient's aim, as with any other treatment, and then examine the hole to evaluate its size and condition and the architecture of the surrounding tissue. Both earlobes can usually be done at the same time. Some earlobes just need closure. Some people need a more complicated tissue rotation.
The term "clefts" is used to describe earlobe injuries. There are several types of early-life injuries. They may happen suddenly, such when an earring becomes tangled in clothes and is ripped out. This may cause the piercing site to extend or possibly split entirely, resulting in a cleft earlobe. When wearing heavy jewelry for a longer period of time, the earlobe piercing may stretch out. This injury may also be brought on by wearing heavy earrings while engaging in sports like running. Someones' repetitive handling or activity with hefty earrings might even cause a rip. Intentional earlobe stretching for body modification jewelry is possible, and earlobe surgery may be desired in later life.
Although uncommon, not everyone is born with earlobes that are the same size or form. At birth, a variety of abnormalities that influence size and/or shape might be detected. Congenital earlobe abnormalities may take the following forms:
Surgery is the most efficient therapy for earlobe abnormalities, whether they are congenital or acquired. Injectable fillers are the sole non-surgical alternative that may be taken into account; they can thicken up excessively thin earlobes or remove wrinkles and creases that appear with age. The standard course of treatment for all other defects is cosmetic ear surgery (otoplasty).
The following are some surgical solutions for earlobe deformities:
Earlobe repairs are usually performed as an outpatient procedure in the clinic under local anesthetic. They are quick and usually you can drive yourself to and from the procedure.
During the procedure, a tiny portion of skin around the split or expanded hole is taken out and then restitched back together using a method known as "W-plasty," which avoids notching as the scar heals and develops.
You may need to come back for suture removal depending on the sewing material (suture) used. The inside sutures dissolve and do not need removal. You will most likely be allowed to go home after the surgery if there are no issues. Make an appointment with Dr. Speron if you want your split earlobe, expanded piercing hole, or stretched ear piercings reversed or healed.
Earlobe repair typically starts at $600. As each instance is unique, this may vary. The amount of time required, the intricacy of the repair, the geographic location, and other factors may all affect this figure. Payment alternatives are available. After their earlobes have healed, many people tell us they should have "done this years ago." This is one of those office operations that may significantly impact a person's life.
Please consult Dr Speron - a board-certified plastic surgeon - to discuss your unique situation for additional information. He will be able to answer any queries you may have and execute the surgery.
There are various possible problems with any surgical treatment that involves cutting the skin, including discomfort, bleeding, infection, scarring, and depression or notching of the region. After the treatment, you will likely have a minor scar. However, if you have a personal or family history of huge, bulky scars, your chances of getting one are higher. Please let our doctors know if you have a history of prominent scars or keloids.
