Head or nasal congestion means your body needs you.

Head or nasal congestion means your body needs you.

The first thing to know is that head or nasal congestion or phlegm is often is a sign of your body fighting or trying to heal something. It can be a complex puzzle to solve. Maybe it's something about you, maybe it's something with your environment?

If you have this, and especially if it persists, it is usually a sign of one or a combination of the following:

  1. Allergies. The mucous forms as a protective barrier from the foreign substance or irritation. There are a lot of things you can try, but the most common is to eliminate carpeting and get a really good air filter.
  2. Infection. Strengthen your immune system and the overall health of your body. Remember, a lot of your immune system is in your gut.
  3. Laryngeal reflux. There is another thing that causes phlegm that many people are not at all aware of. Laryngeal reflux is similar to GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) but often without burping up stomach acid. It can remain completely silent. The most common things to help with this are not eating a 3-4 hours before bedtime, and avoiding really acidic foods like marinara sauce, oranges, orange juices, Carbonated pop drinks, Fried foods, Vinegar and Red wine.

The bottom line is, if you have congestion in your head or nose, your body needs you. Figure out what the problem is and help yourself.
